Local Service Ads vs Google Search Ads: Which Is Better for Tradespeople?

Paid advertising 8 min read Updated

One charges you per lead, the other per click. Both can put a tradesperson at the very top of Google, but the way you pay, the control you have, and what happens when a lead goes bad are completely different between them. Here's an honest comparison.

How Local Service Ads work

Local Service Ads (LSAs) appear above ordinary search ads, marked with a "Google Guaranteed" badge, for trades like plumbing, electrical, locksmiths, cleaning and more depending on your area. To run them you go through a vetting process — background checks, licence and insurance verification — which takes time but also builds instant trust with anyone who sees the badge.

Instead of paying per click, you pay per lead: a phone call or message from someone who contacted you through the ad. Google decides which businesses appear and in what order, based partly on proximity, reviews, and responsiveness, not on how much you bid.

How Search Ads differ

Standard Google Search Ads sit below Local Service Ads (when both are present) and work on pay-per-click bidding — you pay every time someone clicks through, whether or not they ever contact you. You write your own ad copy, choose the exact search terms you want to appear for, and send clicks to whichever landing page you build.

That control is the main advantage: you can exclude irrelevant searches with negative keywords, tailor a landing page to a specific service, and test different messages against each other. Our guide to Performance Max campaigns covers one of the more automated ways Google now runs Search-adjacent campaigns.

A like-for-like comparison

  • Pricing model: LSAs charge per lead; Search Ads charge per click regardless of outcome.
  • Position: LSAs appear above Search Ads when both are shown for the same search.
  • Setup effort: LSAs require background checks and licence verification; Search Ads can be set up the same day.
  • Control over targeting: Search Ads let you choose exact keywords and exclude irrelevant ones; LSA matching is handled by Google.
  • Landing page: Search Ads send clicks to a page you control; LSA leads go straight to a call or message, with less scope for a tailored page.
  • Trust signal: LSAs carry the Google Guaranteed badge; Search Ads carry none built in.
  • Ranking driver: LSA position leans heavily on your review score and response time; Search Ads position leans on bid and Quality Score.

Typical UK costs by trade

Costs vary a lot by trade, area and competition, but rough current UK figures are worth having as a starting point. Local Service Ads leads commonly run £15-£60 per lead depending on trade and location, with emergency trades like locksmiths and boiler repair towards the top of that range. Search Ads clicks for competitive trade keywords often run £2-£15 per click, meaning the actual cost per enquiry depends heavily on how well the landing page converts.

For tradespeople specifically, the comparison usually comes down to predictability: LSAs give a cost per contact, while Search Ads give a cost per click that could turn into a job or could bounce straight off the page.

Disputing bad leads

One real advantage of LSAs is that you can dispute and get credited for leads that were clearly not genuine — a wrong number, a job outside your service area, or an obvious spam contact. Google reviews disputes and refunds valid ones, though the process takes time and not every borderline case is accepted.

With Search Ads there's no equivalent mechanism, since you're paying for the click itself rather than the outcome — a bad click (an accidental tap, a competitor researching, someone far outside your area) is simply a sunk cost.

Why reviews matter more for Local Service Ads

Because LSA position is influenced by your review score and how quickly you respond to enquiries, a business with excellent reviews can outrank a competitor who's spending more. That makes an ongoing effort to collect Google reviews directly valuable for LSA performance, not just for general trust — it's one of the few paid ad formats where reputation and ad performance are this tightly linked.

Search Ads position is far less sensitive to reviews, though a strong review count on the landing page still helps convert the click once it arrives.

Running both, and where to start

Many trades run both at once, since LSAs and Search Ads occupy different positions on the same results page — together they can take up most of the space above the organic listings. If budget only stretches to one, eligibility usually decides it: if your trade and area qualify for Local Service Ads and you can complete verification, they're often the simpler starting point because the pricing is predictable and the trust badge does some of the persuading for you.

Search Ads make more sense when you want control over exactly which searches trigger your ad, need a specific landing page for a specific service, or operate in a trade LSAs don't yet cover. Either approach works best alongside the groundwork covered in our local SEO guide for tradespeople, since organic visibility keeps working even during months you're not paying for ads.

Common questions

What are Google Local Service Ads?

The ads that appear above normal search results with a Google Guaranteed badge. You're vetted and background-checked to qualify, and you pay per lead rather than per click.

Are Local Service Ads cheaper than Search Ads?

Not necessarily cheaper, but more predictable — you pay for a contact rather than a click. In competitive trades, per-lead costs commonly run £15-£60 depending on the trade and area.

Can I run both at once?

Yes, and many trades do. Local Service Ads sit above Search Ads, so running both increases the share of the top of the page you occupy.

Which should a tradesperson start with?

If your trade and area are eligible and you can complete the verification, Local Service Ads are usually the simpler starting point. Search Ads give more control over messaging, landing pages and exactly which searches you appear for.
