Almost every small business we speak to has been quietly paying for 'website maintenance' for years — and almost none of them can tell us what it actually covers. Some are getting a genuine service. Most are paying for hosting rebadged as 'support', with the site itself quietly rotting in the background. Here's what maintenance should actually include, what it should cost, and what to demand from whoever's looking after your site.
What 'maintenance' should actually cover
- Security patching. For a WordPress or plugin-based site, plugin and core updates within days of release. For a static site, a much lighter routine — but still monitoring for known vulnerabilities.
- Uptime monitoring. The maintainer should be checking that the site is up 24/7, and hearing about outages before you do.
- Backups. Daily, off-site, tested. "We back up monthly to the same server" is not a backup, it's a false sense of security.
- Hosting. Fast, SSL, HTTP/3, edge CDN if the traffic warrants it.
- Content updates. Small copy or image changes as needed — typically included up to some sensible monthly cap.
- Analytics & Search Console. Someone actually looking at the numbers occasionally, not just leaving them to gather dust.
If a plan doesn't cover all six, it's not really maintenance — it's hosting with a bill attached.
Typical UK pricing by model
- Pay-as-you-go: £60–£120/hour when you need something. Hosting billed separately at £10–£30/month. Genuinely cheap when the site is quiet — and genuinely expensive the moment anything breaks or needs updating.
- Fixed monthly plan: £30–£100/month depending on what's included. This is where most agencies pitch. Watch out for plans that are "£30/month" but exclude hosting, updates, backups, and content changes — leaving very little actually included.
- Fully-managed (build + maintain in one): £80–£150/month with everything genuinely included, no upfront build cost. This is A9's model, and it's how we manage the ongoing side for clients who want a single fixed monthly line item.
What each maintenance model costs
| Model | Typical UK cost | What's usually included | What's usually not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all | £0 | Hosting, if you're lucky | Updates, backups, security, edits |
| Pay-as-you-go | £40-£80/hr | Fixes when you ask | Monitoring, proactive updates |
| Basic care plan | £25-£60/mo | Updates, backups, uptime checks | Content edits, performance work |
| Fully managed | £80-£200/mo | Everything above plus edits and support | Full redesigns, new functionality |
What A9's managed plan includes as standard
- Fully-managed hand-coded static site — no plugins to patch.
- Edge CDN hosting with free SSL and DDoS protection.
- Daily backups, tested regularly.
- 24/7 uptime monitoring.
- Small content changes on request.
- Google Analytics 4 and Search Console kept configured.
- SEO groundwork maintained as the site grows.
All of that from £80/month with £0 upfront. See our web design and managed hosting pages for full detail, and our pricing guide for how that compares to the wider UK market.
Questions to ask any agency about maintenance
- Exactly what is included in the monthly fee — in writing?
- How quickly are security updates applied after release?
- Where are backups stored, how often, and have they ever been tested by restoring?
- What happens if the site goes down at 9pm on a Saturday?
- What's the cost of a small content change — included, or extra?
- What happens if I want to leave in two years — do I own everything?
Any decent maintenance provider will answer all six in one call, without hesitation. If they can't, that's the answer.
